Community teachers in Ratanakiri, Cambodia

Having spent a lot of time observing schools in rural Northeast Cambodia I was keen to hear the advice for young people from teachers working in these areas. The local UWS schools are staffed by a combination of Government teachers and local community teachers who were members of the local village and who wanted to take a role in the running of the schools now that they had been established.

I spoke with two of these community teachers. What advice did they have for young people in their care?

‘Our advice to our students is to learn Khmer [the main national language] – only this way will they be able to communicate with the wider world.’

‘Learning and knowledge is so important. From that they can follow their dream. You can find a job, but only if you have the knowledge.’
